Severiano "Seve" Ballesteros Sota was the best golfer in Spain.He was from Cantabria. In 1976 he finished second at the British Open. He also won won five championships between 1979 and 1988, the Open Championship three times, and the Masters Tournament twice.
On 6 May 2011, Ballesteros died from a neurological disease he had been suffering for years.

Altamira is a cave in Cantabria famous for its Upper Paleolithic cave paintings of wild mammals and human hands.It was the first cave in which prehistoric cave paintings were discovered. It is near the town of Santillana del Mar in Cantabria, Spain, 30 km west of the city of Santander. The cave with its paintings has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
In the past the paintings were damaged by the carbon dioxide in the breath of the large number of visitors. Altamira was closed to the public in 1977, and reopened to limited access in 1982. Very few visitors were allowed per day.. A replica cave and museum were built nearby and completed in 2001.
Now the government has announced that the caves will be opened towards the end of 2011.

Forest rangers have found 21 brown bears with cubs in the Cantabria mountains. Experts say it is possible that they find more during the following weeks.

Brown bears are a native species in the Cantabrian mountains. We have to protect them because they are in danger of extinction.

Cantabria is an autonomous community in the north of Spain. The first is the Cantabrian flag and the second is the Spanish flag.
People in Cantabria are called "cántabros" and also "montañeses" because we´ve got beautiful mountains. Cantabria also has amazing beaches and wonderful food. A typical dish is the "cocido montañés" (a stew). Here is a picture:


It is made of beams, cabbage, morcilla and chorizo. We love it!
